kauniita unia


suki is finally sleeping through the night! however, she used to be much better about falling asleep, and now she seems to be afraid of the dark. she says things like "hello, is anyone out there?"- it breaks my heart. i now just wait with her until she falls asleep, but that is sometimes a long time. do you have any tips? were you  afraid of the dark as a child, if so what helped comfort you?

p.s. suki sleeps with many soft friends, pillow cases made by me, little auggie sheets and duvet, a rebe blanket, and a roberta roller rabbit blanket. she has three night lights.

  1. as a night person, i often have trouble falling asleep. music always makes it easier. perhaps you can get her a little radio with a timer to play some favourite soft tunes? maybe this one that you can hand crank together each night: http://www.brookfarmgeneralstore.com/products/Solar-Powered-Radio.html or perhaps something with a usb so you can use an ipod. also, one special lullaby album or playlist might give her extra comfort. wishing suki heavy eyelids and sweet dreams!

  2. i used to have horror-ish nightmares. in order to calm myself down, my parents suggested two very helpful things: memorize a calming phrase (song, lyrical verse) and say it repeatedly; imagine myself as one of my favorite characters (ariel from the little mermaid) and journey through the whole story - me as ariel.

    i think tracy rose's idea of music is also quite superb!

    1. thank you, brooke! she was singing herself to sleep for awhile, that was before the fear, it was the best! i should remind her to do this if she is nervous or afraid.

  3. i was really scared as a kid too. camping helped a lot. also, my glow in the dark stars. those days, i was really superstitious and superstition helped too, like, sometimes i would hide a bible under my pillow and it would do magic and keep the monsters away, but i grew up on the margins of the bible belt, so that's that. moral of the story, keeping your friends up by your face and also not letting it get too dark and also heading out to the woods and being safe there.

  4. I co-sleep and that seems to comfort my baby. I also use a very low lit light/lamp in red glass so she can see me if she wakes up and makes the room seem warm and cozy for us.

    1. we stopped co-sleeping awhile back. i wanted the time after she was asleep to catch up on house work and regroup from the day. it was a fairly smooth transition for us, but maybe we need to go back there for some time.
